Gym design is not a simple matter of buying the equipment, fitting it and opening it to customers. The whole process of designing a proper gym for the client's needs requires a systematic process of analyzing the following:
Who is the gym for?
This is important as it determines how the gym will operate (e.g. Private, Public or Limited Public with personal trainers). This will then help to assess the number of clients likely to use the facilities and their requirements.
What are the facilities?
The answer to the previous question will help to progress this next step. A private sports club or hotel may require a wet area (saunas and steam) whereas a public sports club need entrance facilities and access control. For highly personalized training needs, often other facilities are required such as toiletries, towels and private changing areas.
What equipment is needed?
This is all dependent on the answers to the two previous questions. A small private sports club could be happy with using free weights, whereas a public gym would require more safety orientated specialized gym machines. For the more personalized gym, feeling of space and privacy are paramount to the overall design.
What staff are required?
The size, type and function of the gym dictate the staffing needs. In a private gym with personal training needs, finding the right person to provide the service you require can be difficult.
